A little over a year ago I lost someone very close to me. For 17 years we met up for coffee at the 5th Street Public Market in Eugene, Oregon (my hometown). It started when I was in college and became a tradition every time I came home for a visit. It was our place, our thing.

After she passed away, I drove past 5th Street but couldn’t make myself go in. It seemed so wrong to go alone. Finally, last summer, I went. And as soon as I walked into the atrium where we used to sit and sip our coffee I saw the tile in the photo. I’d never noticed it before.

Today, on her birthday, I’m celebrating her life and love with a big cup of coffee. Just the way she’d want it.

Just beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Gandhi really knew what he was talking about, huh?
